Jorge Baracutei Estevez
Years identified as Taíno: since age 5

My grandmother and mother always asserted that we had Native ancestry, and that our hometown of Jaibon, Dominican Republic was home to many people of Indian descent. When I entered school in the United States, however, I was told that we were extinct. This led me to research and eventually work at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian.
