Enrollment with the Higuayagua Taino of the Caribbean: Reconnecting with Our Ancestral Roots

The Higuayagua Taino Tribe of the Caribbean is a vibrant community of Indigenous descendants dedicated to preserving and revitalizing the culture, traditions, and legacy of the Taino people. As the first Indigenous group to encounter European explorers in the Americas, the Taino people hold a unique place in history. Despite the devastating impacts of colonization, including disease, forced labor, and cultural erasure, the Taino spirit endures. Today, the Higuayagua Taino Tribe is committed to reclaiming our identity, strengthening our community, and working toward federal recognition as a sovereign Indigenous nation.

Federal recognition for Native American tribes is a complex and often arduous process, requiring extensive documentation, historical evidence, and cultural continuity. While the Higuayagua Taino Tribe is not yet federally recognized, we are actively engaged in the process of achieving this goal. Federal recognition is not a prerequisite for being part of a tribe or embracing your Taino heritage. Tribal identity is rooted in ancestry, cultural connection, and community—not in government acknowledgment. Our tribe welcomes all individuals of Taino descent who seek to reconnect with their Indigenous roots and join a growing network of Taino descendants dedicated to cultural preservation and revitalization.

The Taino people, once thriving across the Caribbean islands, were among the first Indigenous groups to interact with Europeans during the voyages of Christopher Columbus. This contact led to profound changes, including the dispersal of Taino people through enslavement, intermarriage, and migration. Over centuries, Taino identity was often suppressed or forgotten, but the resilience of our ancestors ensured that our culture survived in fragments—through language, traditions, and oral histories. Today, many people of Caribbean descent are discovering their Taino ancestry through genealogical research, DNA testing, and family stories. The Higuayagua Taino Tribe provides a space for these individuals to come together, share their experiences, and celebrate their heritage.

Reconnecting with fellow Taino descendants is at the heart of our mission. Whether you are just beginning to explore your Indigenous roots or have long identified as Taino, the Higuayagua Taino Tribe offers a supportive community where you can learn, grow, and contribute to the preservation of our culture. By joining our tribe, you become part of a movement to honor our ancestors, educate future generations, and advocate for the recognition of Taino people as a living, thriving Indigenous community.

Federal recognition is a long-term goal for the Higuayagua Taino Tribe, but it is not the sole measure of our legitimacy or unity. Our strength lies in our shared ancestry, our commitment to cultural revitalization, and our collective efforts to build a brighter future for Taino descendants. If you are of Taino descent and wish to connect with others who share your heritage, we invite you to sign up and join our tribe. Together, we can ensure that the legacy of the Taino people continues to thrive for generations to come.
